Bright start to Tasmanian lawn bowl championships

A hot and sunny day made for a bright start to the Bowls Tasmania’s State Bowls Championships which commenced in Hobart today.

Devonport Country Club’s Scott Summers and Makayla Gibson look the players to beat in the Mixed Open Pairs State Championship after knocking out the current State and Australian Mixed Pairs Champions, Tim Douce and Courtney Hobbs, who could only manage one win in their section to finish third.   Senior State players Tony Vince and Kim Saunders impressively won their section as did the husband and wife team of Rob and Jess McMullen to stake their claims on the title.   Other players to win all games in their section were Rose-Ann Howard and Greg Fielding, Darren and Glenda Fielding, Bailey Bellchambers and Chloe Flanagan and Chris and Jenny Martyn,

With some very close games in the Mixed Open Pairs, section winners were Scott Summers and Makayla Gibson, Tony Vince and Kim Saunders,  Rose-Ann Howard and Greg Fielding, Dean Shaw and Wendy Gray, Lachie Thurley and Bronnie King, Darren and Glenda Fielding, Bailey Bellchambers and Chloe Flanagan, Rob and Jess McMullen, Chris and Jenny Martyn, Steve Graf and Peri Buckley, Mike Gaffney and Vicki Fagan, Tim Norris and Janine Stubbs, Grant Wakefield and Tayla Munro, Crystal Brooks and Cameron Norris and Cody Marshall and Amity Bickley.

In the B Grade Mixed Pairs Championships, all all-Taroona grand final will be played at Club Beltana on Sunday morning with Rob Winterbottom and Di Coleman and Michael Behrend and Tracy Cameron both winning their sections undefeated.

Current Bowling Arm Pairs Champions, Geoff Buchanan and Joe Reissig are hoping to make it three championships in a row going through their section undefeated and will be hard to stop in the finals tomorrow.   Other sectional winners in the Bowling Arm Pairs were Noel Buckingham and Vaughn Eaves,  Paul Bugg and Noel Purton and Chris Sturzaker and John Burley.

The State Championships continues on Sunday with post-sectional play and quarter finals in the Open Mixed Pairs, the grand final in the B Grade Mixed Pairs and finals in the Bowling Arm Pairs with all games being played at Club Beltana.

Bowls Tasmania will be live streaming the Bowling Arm Pairs Championship grand final on its Facebook page on Sunday afternoon at approximately 1pm.
