Port Sorell’s Amity Bickley and Bailey Bellchambers finished on top at the Bowls Tasmania State Championships which finished at Rosny Park today when they took out the coveted women’s open and men’s open singles championships.

Bickley had to fight hard against Bruny’s Charlie Harkness in the women’s open singles championship.   .At the half-way mark in the grand final, Bickley held a narrow two-shot lead but won seven of the next nine ends to race away to a 13-shot win.

In the women’s open pairs grand final, Glenorchy Rodman’s Mikayla Baker and Bruny’s Charlie Harkness had to fight off a spirited comeback from Ulverstone sisters Alison Venn and Bronny King to take out the championship.   Baker and Harkness were on top early and raced to a six-shot lead after six ends and still held the lead by five shots after ten ends.   However, Venn and King picked up five shots on the twelfth end to hit the front.   Scores were level after 16 ends, but Baker and Harkness won the final two ends to take out the championship by three shots.

In a high-class grand final Bailey Bellchambers always looked in control and had every answer to Ulverstone’s Rob McMullen in the men’s open singles championship.   Bellchambers played some superb bowls and raced out to a nine-shot lead after 11 ends.   McMullen played very well, but Bellchambers was simply too good winning by 11 shots.

In the men’s open singles semi-final played today, Bellchambers defeated East Launceston’s David Minns by six shots.

In the men’s open pairs championship, Dover RSL’s Shane Garth and Kingborough’s Darryn Reeve started strongly against East Launceston’s Davin Minns and Sandy Bay’s Lucas Howell and opened up a five-shot lead after five ends and were never headed.   Trailing by eight shots after 13 ends, Minns and Lucas scored seven shots on two ends to get within one shot, however, Garth and Reeve steadied to take out the championship by three shots.

The final two rounds of the bowling arm triples championship were played at Rosny Park today.   In a very tight competition, Wynyard’s Paul Bugg, Penguin’s Peter Thow and Brighton’s Steve Hawkins were crowned State Bowling Arm Triples Champions from Royal Hobart’s Bill Mottershead and Chook Downie and Glenorchy City’s Charlie Fysh.
