Junior Golden Nugget – Day 1

by admin on August 1, 2015

Today saw day 1 of the Junior Golden Nugget kick off at the Tweed Heads Bowls Club.  Each year juniors from around Australia are invited to submit their resumes to the Tweed Heads Bowls Club for inclusion into the Junior Golden Nugget.
From all of the resumes received the Tweed Heads chooses 16 boys and 16 girls from the strong list of applicants to make up 4 sections of 4 for each.  After the first days play the winners and runners up from each section will progress to the quarter finals.
Tasmania were fortunate again this year to be well represented, with 4 of our young juniors making the journey up north to compete against some of the best juniors in the nation.  The sole male from the apple isle competing in the event is Lachie Sims, while three girls are represented with Mikayla Fuller, Makayla Gibson and Hollie Keen.  All four juniors are pictured.  During the event they have been well support by TAS/VIC NTC Coach Mark Cowan offering rink side coaching to each player.
Day 1 bought about mixed results for our young tigers. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for Fuller and Keen, who both claimed wins in their second games today but it wasn’t enough to progress through their tough sections.
Sims was our first Tasmanian through the sectional play and straight into the quarter finals with 2 wins and claiming second place in his section.  He will now play Josh (Chop) Corless from Victoria in the morning.
Gibson followed suit also making her way into the quarter finals by going through her section with 1 win and a draw to also take second place. She will also encounter a Victorian, Elisa Rigoni.
We wish both Makayla and Lachie all the best for tomorrow. TASSIE TASSIE TASSIE!!!
