Champion Duo Back for Penguin Classic

Champion Duo Kelvin Kerkow and Steve Glasson are heading back to Tassie for the 2015 Penguin Classic as Brad Cole reports for The Advocate Newpaper.
ORGANISERS of January’s Penguin Classic Pairs tournament have received a boost after confirmation that high-profile Australian bowlers Steve Glasson and Kelvin Kerkow are returning to compete.

The duo attracted plenty of interest this year, with Glasson pairing up with Tasmanian junior champion Hollie Keen, while Kerkow formed a formidable partnership with Burnie champion Mark Nitz.

Glasson will once again team up with the state junior champion once it is decided in early January, with Kerkow and Nitz coming together once again for an assault on their share of the $12,000 in prizemoney after missing the final last year.

The former Australian representatives are undoubtedly two of the most accomplished bowlers to compete in the tournament’s 31-year history, with Glasson the 2004 singles world champion and nine-time national champion.

Kerkow has a 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medal on his resume along with the 1996 world indoor pairs title.

Tournament organising committee member T. C. Hofman said the popularity of the event continues to grow around Australia.

“We had 136 pairs take part this year, and already we have 20 teams from the mainland confirmed,” he said.

“It brings people into the area and they all spend money, so it’s good economically.”

The event will be held from January 26-28 at Penguin and surrounding bowls clubs.
