Yesterday’s rain slowed the greens down at Ulverstone, but that didn’t stop some great bowls being played in the prestigious Bowls Tasmania Men’s and Women’s Open Singles Championships which continued today, with the field whittled down to just the semi-finalists.

In the Men’s Open Singles Championships, round-of-sixteen winners were Tim Douce, Lachie Thurley, Michael Andersch, Peter Jenkins, Shane Wain, Jason Dent, David Minns and Darren Maddrell.   In four very-tight quarter-finals Lachie Thurley defeated Tim Douce by two shots, Peter Jenkins beat Michael Andersch by five shots, Shain Wain  finished three shots in front of Jason Dent and David Minns beat Darren Maddrell by nine shots.

In the Women’s Open Singles Championship, round-of-sixteen winners were Barb Liddington, Amity Bickley and Julie Harrold. In the quarterfinals, Janet McCarthy defeated Barb Liddington by seven shots, last year’s champion Amity Bickley finished 18 shots in front of Karen Pickering, Mikayla Baker beat Janet Rutherford by 15 shots and Charlie Harkness defeated Julie Harrold by twelve shots.

Sectional play in the Bowling Arm Triples Championships commenced today.   Sectional winners were Bill Mottershead, Chook Downie and Les Reynolds; Paul Bugg, Peter Thow and Rodney O’Halloran; and Dennis Page, Rex Kidd and Sally Archer.   Bill Mottershead and Paul Bugg will meet in the semi-final, with the winners to meet Dennis Page in the grand final tomorrow.

The championships conclude tomorrow at Ulverstone with grand finals in the Open Men’s and Women’s Pairs, semi-finals and grand finals in the Open Men’s and Women’s Singles Championships, and finals of the Bowling Arm Triples and Fours Championships.

Bowls Tasmania will be live streaming the Women’s Open Pairs Championships at 9.30am and the Men’s Open Singles Grand Final at approximately 3.00pm on its Facebook page.
