Hayes and Maher shine in the Para Bowls Tasmania Singles Championships
Wet weather on the busiest day of Bowls Tasmania’s Gala Week today caused havoc as Ulverstone, Latrobe and Penguin all closed their grass greens today – with play transferred to the Burnie Bowls Club and the Devonport Country Club’s indoor centres with the exception of the bowling arm championships which were played on Latrobe’s new all-weather synthetic green.
The Men’s and Women’s Para Singles Championships were played as sectional play round robins at Devonport. Dover RSL’s Kindilan Hayes was runner-up in this event last year but went one better this year and was undefeated in the round robin to take out the Men’s Para Singles Championship from Kings Meadows Gerard Little. Cressy’s Debbie Maher won her second consecutive Women’s Para Singles Championship when she too went undefeated in her round robin with Trevallyn’s Fiona Davis being the runner-up.
Play commenced in the prestigious Bowls Tasmania Men’s and Women’s Open Singles Championships which got underway at the Burnie and Devonport Country Club’s indoor centres. Games had to be shortened to 15 shots up with the final games of sectional play not being contested if the players could not win the section, to enable all the required games to be played today.
In the Men’s Open Singles Championship, sectional play winners were Tim Douce, Codi Marshall, Mitchel Banks, Lachie Thurley, Rob McMullen, Michael Andersach, Patrick Wetzel, Peter Jenkins, Mark Atkinson, Shane Wain, Brad Carver, Jason Dent, Archie Burton, David Minns, Marcus McCarthy and Darren Maddrell.
In the Women’s Open Singles Championship, sectional play winners were Barb Liddington, Glenda Fielding, Janet McCarthy, Karen Pickering, Denise Tanner, Amity Bickley, Janet Rutherford, Mikayla Baker, Charlie Harkness, Vicki Winley and Julie Harrold.
Played in wet and miserable conditions at Latrobe, sectional play in the Bowling Arm Fours Championships was also played today. Section winners were Bill Mottershead, Chook Downie, Peter Kemp and Les Reynalds and Phil Prouse, Daryl Henri, Graham Whatley and John Burley who will meet in the grand final on Friday.
The championships continue tomorrow at Ulverstone – weather permitting – with post-sectional play and quarter and semifinals in the Men’s and Women’s Open Singles Championships and sectional play in the Bowling Arm Triples Championships
The championships conclude on Friday at Ulverstone with grand finals in the Open Men’s and Women’s Pairs and Singles Championships, together with the conclusion of the Bowling Arm Triples and Fours Championships.
