High class bowls were the order of the day when the Bowls Tasmania’s State Junior Championships concluded yesterday at the Longford Bowls and Community Club with Cremorne’s Mitchell Banks and Brighton’s Olivia Ims taking out the coveted junior boys and junior girls singles championships.

The junior boys singles championship final series saw the three winners in the boys singles sectional play pitted against each other yesterday morning in a sectional play final series for the championship.    In the first game Banks defeated Burnie’s Miller Hanlon 21-13.   In the second game, North Launceston’s Ollie Wetzel beat Hanlon 21-5 to set up a virtual grand final against Banks in the final game of the series.   In the final game, Banks started strongly and raced to  a 9-1 lead after six ends before Wetzel fought back to get to within three shots after 11 ends but that was as close as he got.   With great draw bowling. Banks finished strongly to win the boys singles championship 21-13.

The final two rounds of sectional play in the girls singles championship were played yesterday morning with the two sectional winners playing off in the grand-final in the afternoon.   Patmore won all three games in her section to advance to the grand final with Brighton’s Elizabeth Ims finishing in second position with two wins.   Brighton’s Olivia Ims won the other section winning both her games with Glenorchy Rodman’s Miley Sutton finishing in second position with one win.   In the grand final, Patmore started well winning the first three ends to go to a 5-0 lead and led 8-5 after eight ends.   However, four shots on the ninth end saw Ims hit the front for the first time and she was never headed again as she raced away to win the girls singles championship 21-11.
