Southern teams rule State Men’s Fours Championships
Another hot day and great bowls were the order of the day at the Rosny Park Bowls Club today when Bowls Tasmania’s State Open Fours Championships were finalised.
In the men’s fours championship grand final, all eight participants were from southern clubs. In an enthralling grand final, the winner was not known until the second last bowl of the final end. Dover RSL’s Chris Norris, Rick Ormerod and Cameron Norris and Rosny Park’s Darren Monks prevailed by one shot over Kingborough’s Jarrod Long, Heath Seabourne, Clinton Seabourne and Franklin’s Brad Johns in the grand final. Norris overcame a slow start to race out to a seven-shot lead over Long after thirteen ends, before Long bounced back winning five of the six final ends to fall one shot short on the final end.
In the men’s semi-finals, Norris defeated Ulverstone’s Taelyn Male, Kingborough’s Will Coad and Ryan Guy-Rees and Sandy Bay’s Josh Lording by two shots and Long narrowly beat Ulverstone’s Tim Douce, Turner’s Beach’s Jack Ellis, Sandy Bay’s Josh Mabb and Kingborough’s Jack Butler by one shot.
Port Sorell’s Rae Simpson and Tracey Little, Glenorchy Rodman’s Joy Voss and Kingborough’s Crystal Brooks played consistent bowls all game to defeat the highly fancied team of Invermay’s Rebecca Van Asch and Jess McMullen, Glenorchy Rodman’s Mikayla Baker and Devonport Country Club’s Ashlee Woolley by three shots to win the women’s fours grand final. With Brooks leading well and Little playing some big shots, Simpson built up a nine-shot lead after ten ends. Van Asch fought back winning four of the final five ends to reduce Simpson’s final winning margin to three shots.
In the women’s semi-finals, Simpson defeated Railton’s Noelene Purton and Wendy Smith, Penguin’s Gail Thow and Ulverstone’s Denise Fitzpatrick by sixteen shots and Van Asch had to work hard to overcome Invermay’s Kim Saunders, Debbie Lee, Jean Claridge and Westbury’s Denise Middap by one shot.
