Douce does it again in State Senior Mens Pairs Championship
Turners Beach’s Greg Douce followed up his win in the Bowls Tasmania’s State Senior (Over 60’s) Men’s Fours Bowls Championship on Tuesday, taking out the Men’s Senior Pairs Championship in style at the championships which finished at North Launceston yesterday.
Douce teamed up with East Launceston’s Mitch Billing to be crowned Senior Men’s Pairs State Champions after defeating Brighton’s Mick Daniels and Beltana’s Shane Young in the grand final 14-11 in a game that was much closer than the scores reflected. In a very tight game, Daniels and Young threatened to take the game away from Douce and Billing on a number of occasions when they held multiple scores on several ends only to see Douce come in and take the shot or multiple shots, with Douce and Billing winning by three shots.
In the men’s semi-finals, Douce and Billing beat Penguin’s Wayne Manson and Peter French 12-11 in a game that was decided by an outstanding last bowl winner from Douce and Daniels and Young defeated Orford’s Chris Martyn and Ricky Limbrick 13-7.
In the Women’s Senior Pairs grand final, Cosgrove Park sisters Vicki Winley and Trudy Rundle had a heart stopping one shot win against King Meadows’ Judy Gurr and Westbury’s Denise Middap in an outstanding grand final. Gurr and Middap started strongly to lead early on, but Winley and Rundle gradually got on top and led by four shots with one end to go. Two outstanding bowls from Gurr resulted in four shots to level the scores at 15-all to force the grand final into a sudden-death extra end. Winley and Rundle managed to score the winning shot on the extra end to take out the championship 16-15.
In the women’s semi-finals, Winley and Rundle defeated a composite team of Westbury’s Bev Huett and South Burnie’s Helen Sturzaker 10-5 and Gurr and Middap easily accounted for Cressy’s Di Byard and Julie Morris 20-1.
