In a high-quality grand final, Turners Beach’s Greg Douce and Burnie’s Joe Simpson and Pat Saltmarsh made it back-to-back State Senior Men’s Fours Championships at the North Launceston Bowls Club today.

Douce, Simpson and Saltmarsh teamed up with Burnie’s Gerald McCarthy and were crowned State Senior Men’s Fours Champions when they defeated Orford’s Chris Martyn, Clive Kelton, Ricky Limbrick and Brighton’s Mick Daniels 16-14 in a great grand final.   Martyn started strongly and jumped out to an eight-shot lead after nine ends, however, Douce fought back and hit the front after sixteen ends.   Martyn won the next end to level the scores going into the final end.   Martyn held the winning shot until Douce drove that bowl out with his last bowl to win the championship 16-14.

In two very tight men’s semi-finals, Douce defeated David Minns, Chris Lee, David Heron and Ray Boucher 12-10 and Martyn beat Ricki Richardson, Grant Youd, Peter O’Donnell and Geoff Wisemen 16-15.

Invermay’s Kim Saunders, Debbie Lee and Jean Claridge and Kings Meadows Maggie Campbell were never headed in defeating Sandy Bay’s Peri Buckley and Howrah’s Denise  Tanner, Bernie Carroll and Anne Allenby to take out the State Senior Women’s Fours Championship winning convincingly 23-13.   With Claridge leading well, Saunders jumped out to an eleven-shot lead after eleven ends .   Buckley closed the gap to five shots with two ends to go, but Saunders steadied and won the last two ends to win the championship.

In the women’s semi-final, Buckley scored four shots on the final end to defeat Cosgrove Park’s Maureen Zoon, Vicki Winley and Trudy Rundle and East Launceston’s Janet McCarthy 16-15.
