Riley Davie shines in Tasmanian State Junior Championships
High class bowls were the order of the day when the Bowls Tasmania’s State Junior Championships concluded today at the Kings Meadows Indoor Centre with Brighton’s Riley Davie outstanding in taking out the junior boys pairs and singles championships.
The day started with the boys pairs grand final between Brighton’s Riley Davie and Cremorne’s Mitch Banks and East Launceston’s Ollie Morrison and Longford’s Lachie Strochnetter and what a game it was. With some outstanding lead bowls from Banks, Davie was able to control the game from the outset whilst adding some great shots of his own. It did not matter what Morrison and Strochnetter did or how well they played, Davie and Banks always had the answer, and they went on to win the grand final 24 – 9.
The girls junior singles championships were played as sectional play with every player playing each other over five rounds. The final two rounds were played today, and Glenorchy Rodman’s Miley Sutton remained undefeated winning all four games played to win the championship. Burnie’s Imogen Patmore won three of her four games to finish as the runner-up.
In the semi-finals of the boys singles championship, Brighton’s Riley Davie defeated Longford’s Fletcher Felmingham 21-8 and East Launceston’s Ollie Morrison beat Ulverstone’s Lachie Thurley 21-13.
The final game of the championships was the boy’s singles championship grand final. Davie and Morrison were both outstanding in the best match of the championships. Davie and Morrison were neck and neck, with the lead changing multiple times, some expert drawing, great drives from Morrison and concentration from them both. Morrison led 7-3 after six ends but Davie won six of the next eight ends to race out to a 15-9 lead. Morrison fought back and levelled the scores at 18-all after twenty-one ends. With consistent draw bowling, Davie held his nerve to win the next two ends to take out the grand final in a high-quality game of bowls 21-18.
