Tasmanian Junior Bowls Championships get underway in Launceston

by Rob McGuire on January 13, 2025

The best junior (under 18) bowlers in Tasmania were on show as Bowls Tasmania’s State Junior Championships commenced today at the Longford Bowls and Community Club and will conclude on Wednesday.

The championships started in bright, sunny conditions despite forecast showers.   However, an overnight storm slowed what was otherwise a perfect grass green at Longford.

Invermay’s Nakia Daines teamed up with Westbury’s Jessie Willis to take out the State Junior Girls Pairs Championship from Glenorchy Rodman’s Miley Sutton and Burnie’s Imogen Patmore.   Daines and Willis scored a five early on and maintained that advantage for most of the game.   Sutton and Patmore threatened on a number of occasions, but Daines and Willis were too good and raced away over the final few ends to win by 12 shots.

In the Boys Junior Pairs Championship, sectional play winners were East Launceston’s Ollie Morrison and Longford’s Lachie Strochnetter and Brighton’s Riley Davie and Cremorne’s Mitchel Banks.   Both sectional winners were undefeated and will meet in the grand final on Wednesday.

The championships continue at Longford tomorrow (Tuesday) with sectional play in the junior boys and girls singles championships.
