Battle of the Codes at Government House

by Rob McGuire on October 3, 2024

Teams from six different sporting codes will compete.in a Battle of the Codes lawn bowls event on the green at Government House on Friday 04 October 2024 on behalf of Bowls Australia, Clubs Tasmania, and Bowls Tasmania. The event will start at midday.

Teams competing on the day will be professional men’s Twenty20 franchise cricket team Hobart Hurricanes, professional field hockey club Tassie Tigers, Netball Tasmania, AFL Tasmania and the brand-new Tasmania Football Club, the Devils, who are set to compete in the AFL from 2028, and current NBL champions the Tasmania Jack Jumpers.

The Tasmania Tridents are high performance bowls athletes and they, along with other bowlers, are attending to give advice and coaching to the competing teams. The current world ranking number one female Kelsey Cottrell will also be visiting to provide advice and tips to the teams.

Bowls Australia CEO Matthew Kennedy said this is a great opportunity to showcase lawn bowls and bring together other sporting codes for a fun day incorporating getting outdoors and playing sport.

“Bowls is a sport that can be enjoyed by Australians of all ages and abilities while still being fiercely competitive, so it will be fantastic to witness athletes from these other sporting codes enjoying some friendly rivalry out on the green and showcasing the sport, particularly with the Nationals set to be staged in North West Tasmania next year,” he said.

“We are very grateful to Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Governor of Tasmania for hosting this event.”

Bowls Tasmania CEO Rob McGuire said the games will be along the lines of Bowls Premier League (BPL) which is the Twenty20 of bowls – it’s fast, fun, and it appeals to non-bowlers who may get the chance to see bowls in a different light.

Clubs Tasmania project manager Tom Darke said the Battle of the Codes event was a fantastic opportunity for Tasmanian sporting organisations to gather in an enjoyable environment.

“We’re honoured to have been invited by Her Excellency, the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, to participate and help organise this event,” Mr Darke said.

“It is not often we can have representatives from all of Tasmania’s major sporting codes join forces in the one place and the day will provide the perfect opportunity for everyone to network and share ideas, but most importantly have some fun.

“Of course, knowing the competitive nature of the representatives from each sport, it will be fascinating to see who can emerge victorious and take bragging rights on the day – I’m sure there will be plenty of light-hearted banter.”

The event is a round-robin playing two-bowl triples – with five games of five ends each.   Results will be posted on Bowls Link throughout the afternoon via the following link:
