Top bowlers shine in Bowls Tasmania Singles Championships

Bright sunshine in Launceston brought out the best in the State’s top bowlers who started their journey to try and win the prestigious Bowls Tasmania Men’s and Women’s Open and B Grade Singles Championships which got underway at North Launceston, Trevallyn and Invermay today.

In the Men’s Open Singles Championship, sectional play winners were Jade Groenewege, Lachie Thurley, Sam Springer, Glen Frame, Mark Strochnetter, Bailey Bellchambers, Paul Costello, Rob McMullen, Mitchell Billing, Chris Lee, Grant Wakefield, David Minns, Brad Carver, Mitchell Mathews, Tim Douce, Ollie Morrison and Darren Monks.

In the Women’s Open Singles Championship, sectional play winners were Lyn Triffitt, Linda Rose, Crystal Brooks, Cheryl Fielding, Jill Silvey, Rae Simpson, Heather Thompson, Maureen Zoon and Amity Bickley.

In the Men’s B Grade Singles Championship, Rob Winterbottom, Dean Gilchrist, Wayne Wright and Gavin Cleary all won their sections and have made it to the semifinals.

The Women’s B Grade Singles Championship has reached the grand-final stage where Lyn Cornelius is up against Shaz Hyland.

In the Women’s Para Singles Championships, which was played as a sectional play round-robin, Devonport Country Club’s Debbie Pilgrim was crowned the winner from West Launceston’s Robyn Anderson.

The Men’s Para Singles Championships is also being played as a sectional play round robin.   After three rounds, Jason Dent and Chris Newman are undefeated.   The final two rounds will be played on Friday.

The Bowling Arm Fours Championships concluded today.   Played over five rounds, Trevallyn’s Geoff Buchanan and Joe Reissig, Launceston’s John Borg and Ridgley’s Vaughan Eaves remained undefeated to win the championship from Wynyard’s Paul Bugg, Smithton’s Rod O’halloran, Railton’s Noel Purton and Latrobe’s Kevan Gaffney.


The championships continue tomorrow with post-sectional play and quarter and semifinals in the Men’s and Women’s Open and B Grade Singles Championships and sectional play in the Bowling Arm Triples Championships.  

The championships conclude on Friday at North Launceston with grand finals in the Open Men’s and Women’s Pairs and Singles, B Grade Men’s and Women’s Singles, Men’s Para Singles and Bowling Arm Triples Championships.
