Honours in the Bowls Tasmania’s State Senior (Over 60’s) Bowls Championships were shared between teams from Penguin and Invermay who took out the men’s and women’s senior pairs championships which finished at Burnie today.

Penguin’s Wayne Manson and Peter French were crowned Senior Men’s Pairs Champions after defeating Beltana’s Tony Vince and Shane Young in the grand final 19-12.  Manson and French jumped out of the blocks and raced away to a ten-shot lead after just three ends but Vince and Young fought their way back into the grand final to get within four shots after nine ends. However, that was as close as they could get with Manson and French steadying to win the grand final by seven shots.

In the men’s semi-finals, Manson and French beat  Ridgley’s Anthony Armstrong and Nigel Melbourne 11-6 and Vince and Young defeated Port Sorell’s Shane Murrell and Steven Cock 15-6.

In the Women’s Senior Pairs, Invermay’s Kim Saunders and Debbie Lee convincingly won the State Senior Women’s Pairs Championship against Howrah’s Janet Rutherford and Lyn Page 23-3.   After a tight first six ends Saunders and Lee led by just one shot but stormed away over the next six ends picking up nineteen shots in the process to easily win the championship by twenty shots – without the need to play the last three ends.

In the women’s semi-finals, Saunders and Lee defeated a composite Kingborough and Howrah combination of Kerrie Lane and Anne Mullavey 15-6 and Rutherford and Page beat another composite team, consisting of Cosgrove Park’s Maureen Zoon and East Launceston’s Janet McCarthy 13-4.
