Senior Pairs Championships underway

Over 120 bowlers took to the greens at Burnie, South Burnie and Penguin today  to compete in sectional play rounds of the Men’s and Women’s of the Bowls Tasmania’s State Senior (Over 60’s) Bowls Championships.

Sectional play winners in the Men’s Pairs were Michael Berechree and John Stronach, Wayne Manson and Peter French, Peter Zoon and Wayne Foster, Joe Simpson and Grant Youd, Shane Murrell and Steve Cock, Gary McCarthy and John Borg, and Tony Vince and Shane Young who all remained undefeated.    Other sections were much closer with winners being Anthony Armstrong and Nigel Melbourne and Kevin White and Peter Thow.

One post-sectional game of Men’s Pairs is scheduled for tomorrow with McCarthy and Borg meeting Vince and Young to reduce the field to eight for quarter-final play on Wednesday.

In the Women’s Pairs, sectional play winners were Kim Saunders and Debbie Lee, Rae Simpson and Jean Claridge and Mareen Zoon and Janet McCarthy who all remained undefeated.   The other three sections were much closer with Kerrie Lane and Anne Mullavey, and Janet Rutherford and Lyn Page scraping through to the quarterfinals with two wins and a loss each.   In the closest section of the day, Trudy Webb and Vicki Fagan  and Rose’anne Howard and Jill Silvey won two games each, with Webb and Fagan prevailing with a shot difference of +13 compared to Howard and Silvey’s +8.

The Seniors Championships continue on Tuesday at Burnie with post-sectional play in the Men’s Pairs and finals in the Men’s and Women’s Fours Championships.   The grand final of the Women’s Fours and the Men’s Fours will commence at 3.00pm.

The Seniors Championships conclude on Wednesday with quarterfinals, semi-finals and the grans finals in the Men’s and Women’s Pairs Championships.
