Nitz and Simpson crowned Tasmanian Champion of Champion Singles Champions
Congratulations to Burnie’s Mark Nitz and Kings Meadows Rae Simpson who won the Men’s and Women’s State Champion of Champion Singles Championships which were played at Burnie yesterday today.
Each of the six players had progressed through to the State Finals after winning their way through their respective Club’s Open Singles Championships and then their regional final. The men’s finalists were Joseph Thomas (North), Mark Nitz (North West) and Will Coad (South) and the women’s finalists were Rae Simpson (North), Glenda Fielding (North West) and Tayla Munro (South).
After winning the State title last year and being runner-up at the national final in October 2022, Nitz’s chances of back-to-back titles took a dive when he was narrowly beaten in the first sectional play game of the sectional play by Longford’s Joseph Thomas 20-21. Nitz bounced back in the second game to defeat Kingborough’s Will Coad 21-12. Thomas only had to win the final game to win the championship but Coad had other ideas beating Thomas 21-15 meaning all three players had won one game each. In the end, Nitz won the championship with a shot difference of +8 with Coad in second position with -3 and Thomas on -5.
In the women’s event Kings Meadows Rae Simpson came away from the day undefeated to claim the women’s title. Simpson started well defeating Penguin’s Glenda Fielding in the first game 21-12. Glenorchy City’s Tayla Munroe then beat Fielding 21-9 setting up a winner-take all situation for the final game. Simpson was always in control and defeated Munroe 21-11 to win the championship.
Nitz and Simpson will now head to the Australian Champion of Champion Singles Championship which will be played in Western Australia on 6 and 7 October 2023.
