Young guns lead the way in State Pairs Championships

Bowls Tasmania’s Gala Week of bowls continued today at the Burnie Bowls Club with the Bowls Tasmania Open Men and Women Pairs Championships to get down to the semi-finals.

In the Men’s Open Pairs semi-finals, young guns Codi Marshall and Bailey Bellchambers defeated Rick Ormerod and Cam Norris by seven shots and Rob McMullen and Brad Johns beat Jack Ellis and Grant Allford in a nail biting finish by one shot.   In the quarter-finals, Marshall and Bellchambers defeated Stewart Cashion and Rob Pyke by four shots, McMullen and  Johns overcame Chris Stubbs and Michael Febey by ten shots, Ormerod and Norris beat Dale Walker and Nigel Pedley by three shots and Ellis and Allford finished one shot in front of Josh Appleyard and Josh Walker-Davis.

In the Women’s Open Pairs semi-finals, Kim Saunders and Debbie Lee defeated Judy Gurr and Madge Strochnetter by 11 shots and Heather Thompson and Janet McCarthy beat Tracey Little and Glenda Fielding by three shots.    In the quarter-finals, Saunders and Lee defeated Crystal Brooks and Mel Kennedy by six shots, Gurr and Strochnetter overcame Diane Byard and Julie Bannon by three shots, Thompson and McCarthy beat Rose’anne Howard and Lisa Weeding by three shots and Little and Fielding finished nine shots in front of Carol Bannister and Caroline Monks

It was Sandy Bay first and second in the Men’s B Grade Pairs Championship grand final with all four players from Sandy Bay.   Mark Quinane  and Michael Gallen started well and jumped out to a handy lead and then fought off a spirited challenge from Bill Mottershead and Tony Barrie to win the championship by three shots.

In the Disability Pairs championships, sectional winners were Jacob Sheerin-Wall and Grant Hills and Alan Ryman and Greg Smith who will meet in the grand final on Friday morning at 9.30am.

The championships continue tomorrow with knock-out play in the Men’s and Women’s Open and B Grade Singles Championships at Burnie, South Burnie, Penguin and Ulverstone and sectional play in the Bowling Arm Fours Championships at Burnie.   The championships conclude on Friday
