Top day for Moore, Saunders and Viney
A great final day for Latrobe’s Erin Moore, Invermay’s Kim Saunders and Trevallyn’s Kirsten Viney who ended Bowls Tasmania’s Gala Week on a high taking out the prestigious Women’s Open Triples Championship at Trevallyn today.
Moore started the day by narrowly defeating the current State Triples Champions skipped by former international Invermay’s Rebecca Van Asch by two shots then followed it up by beating Franklin’s Carol Bannister in another tight game by four shots in the semi-final. The grand final was another close game but Moore prevailed by two shots against East Launceston’s Heather Thompson, Penguin’s Rose’Ann Howard and Karen King. In the other semi-final, Thompson defeated Wynyard’s Dee Harman by 12 shots.
In the Men’s Open Triples Championship, Devonport Country Club’s Scott Summers, Cam Windram and Philip Munday took out the honours defeating Burnie’s Taelyn Male and Port Sorell’s Codi Marshall and Baily Bellchambers by nine shots. In the semi-finals, Summers defeated Latrobe’s Tim Douce by two shots and Male beat Kingborough’s Tony Rowe by two shots.
The day started off with the grand final of the J. Carroll Card Promotions Girls Junior Singles Championships which was won by Trevallyn’s Chloe Collins who celebrated the win on her 16th birthday. In a high quality final, Collins overcame a slow start with great draw bowls to get on top of Glenorchy Rodman’s Miley Sutton to win the grand final by seven shots.
The strength of junior boys bowls in Tasmania was reflected in the grand final of the Junior Boys Singles Championship. In a magnificent game that went down to the wire, Burnie’s Jonty Hayes trailed Port Sorell’s Logan Marshall for most of the match but kept a cool-head in the end to win a thriller by two shots. In the semi-finals, Hayes defeated Ulverstone’s Lachlan Thurley by ten shots and Marshall beat Longford’s Ollie Morrison by five shots.
The Bowling Arm Singles Championship was taken out by Glenorchy City’s Noel Buckingham who defeated South Burnie’s Chris Sturzaker by five shots. In the semi-finals, Buckingham defeated Trevallyn’s David Sims by seven shots and Sturzaker beat Trevallyn’s Geoff Buchanan by 11 shots
