Douce and Hobbs crowned State Mixed Pairs Champions

by Rob McGuire on January 9, 2023

Playing consistently good bowls all week, Latrobe’s Tim Douce and East Launceston’s Courtney Hobbs were crowned Bowls Tasmania’s 2023 Open Mixed Pairs Champions today in a high standard and entertaining grand final at Trevallyn.

Their opponents, Glenorchy Rodman’s Jack Ellis and Michelle Moate played some fantastic draw bowls and jumped out to an early two shot lead after winning four of the first five ends but it was  a number of great conversions from Douce that swung the game in their favour and Douce and Hobbs held on to win by ten shots – a final margin that did not do justice to just how close a game it was.   In high quality semi-finals in the morning, Douce and Hobbs had to fight hard to beat Westbury Denise Middap and Brighton’s Grant Wakefield by five shots and Ellis and Moate defeated Invermay’s Chris and Debbie Lee by eight shots.

Douce and Hobbs will now represent Tasmania in the 2023 Australian Open Mixed Pairs Championships which will be held in Western Australia in October 2023.

In the J. Carroll Club Promotions Junior Girls Singles Championship played at Longford, sectional play winners were Trevallyn’s Chloe Collins and Glenorchy Rodman’s Miley Sutton.   In the  Junior Boy’s Singles Championships, sectional play winners were Logan Marshall, Fletcher Felmingham, Oliver Morrison, Henry Hollingsworth, Olava Magnus, Jonty Hayes, Lachlan Thurley Riley Davie.

Sectional play for the Bowling Arm Singles Championships was held at Trevallyn with section winners being Geoff Buchanan, Gordon Hurst, Peter Thow, Chris Sturzaker, David Sims, Graeme Percey, Noel Buckingham and Heather Jones.

Gala Week continues on Tuesday with sectional play in the prestigious Men’s Triples Championship being played at Kings Meadows and the Women’s Triples Championship at Trevallyn.   Semi-finals and the grand final in the J. Carroll Card Promotions Boys Junior Pairs Championships and the grand final in the Junior Girls Pairs Championship will take place at Trevallyn together with post-sectional play in the Bowling Arm Singles Championship.
