It rained gold for Tasmanian bowler, Rob McMullen, on the final day of the Australian Open Championships at Broadbeach in Queensland on Friday.   In the grand final of the coveted  Australian Open Men’s Singles Championship, it was McMullen who plays at the Kings Meadows club in Launceston, who took home the gold following a sensational performance against the Northern Territory’s Scott Hollingsworth.

McMullen won his opening two games of the sectional rounds before he came up against Queensland’s Dean McWhinney who narrowly beat McMullen 25-24, but it was enough to see McMullen book his passage through to the grand final on shots over his conqueror.

In the other section, it was a three-way tussle between Hollingworth, Victoria’s Thor Shannon and New South Welshman Kenta Treacher, with Hollingsworth winning his place in the grand final by the narrowest of margins.

Bowling brilliantly in the grand final, McMullen stormed away from the outset and never looked like losing.   At one stage McMullen boasted a 19-0 lead before Hollingsworth was able to register a score and his only winning end for the game – with McMullen finally winning convincingly 24-2.
