Gold Medals for Tasmania at Australian Open

It rained gold for Tasmanian bowlers at the Australian Open at Broadbeach in Queensland today as Rebecca Van Asch was part of the winning Women’s Open Fours team and David Minns came up trumps in the final of the Men’s Multi-Disability Singles.

In the Women’s Open Fours Championships, Invermay’s Rebecca Van Asch teamed up with Queensland’s Kelsey Cottrell amd Linsey Clarke and New South Wales Sam Fergusson and were never headed in a convincing 17-9 victory over Queensland’s Serena Bonnell, Vicki Day, Marilyn Emerton and New South Wales’ Gail Crompton.

In what was described as the match of the Australian Open, East Launceston’s David Minns won the gold medal in the Men’s Multi-Disability Singles Championship on the last bowls of the match against Victoria’s Frank Krslovic winning 21-20.   Minns jumped out to an early lead against Krslovic before scores were level at 10 all.   Kryslovic got on top in the second half of the game and lead 17-16 and was holding three shots on the next end before Minns trailed the jack with his last bowl to score three shots and jump out to a 19-16 lead.   Kryslovic fought back and levelled the scores at 20 all just missing out on the championship on the second last end when the umpire declared Minns was holding second shot.   On the final end, Kryslovic drew three close bowls to have the championship in his grasp before Minns kept his composure to draw the shot with his last bowl and take out the win.

Congratulations Rebecca and David.
