TOP BOWLS AT DEVONPORT

by Rob McGuire on January 9, 2022

More wet weather on the North West Coast resulted in the second day of  Bowls Tasmania’s Gala Week being transferred to the Devonport Country Club where top bowls were the order of the day.

The Open Mixed Pairs Championship was reduced to just four pairs after post-sectional, the round of sixteen and quarterfinals were played.   In the quarter finals, Isaac Maughan and Michell Moate defeated Rob and Jess McMullen by three shots, Josh Walker-Davis and Rae Simpson finished four shots in front of Luke Turner and Crystal Brooks, Gene and Candice Ayton raced out to an eight-shot lead after seven ends and had to fight off a spirited comeback from Adrian Feltham and De Harman to win by four shots and Michael Sims and Lauren Banks had a comfortable nine shot win over Grant Alford and Peta Barnett.

The first grand final of Gala Week was decided in the Bowling Arm Pairs where Trevallyn’s Geoff Buchanan and Joe Reissig made it back-to-back State Bowling Arm Pairs Championship winners with a convincing twelve shot win over South Burnie’s Keith Beavis and Wynyard’s Vaughan Evans.   In the semi-finals, Buchanan and Reissig defeated   Trevallyn’s Gordon Hurst and Westbury’s Owen Preston by four shots and Beavis and Evans defeated Penguin’s Peter Thow and Tony Lynd by one shot in a game that was decided by an extra end tie breaker.  Peter Thow played a brilliant bowl in the final end of the semi-final to pick up six shots to force the game into an extra end only to unluckily give the shot away with his last bowl in the extra end.

Gala Week continues on Monday  with semi-finals and the grand final in the Open Mixed Pairs and sectional play in the Girls Junior Singles and the Bowling Arm Singles at Burnie.   Sectional play in the Boys Junior Singles will be played at South Burnie.
