Open State-Wide Challenge Results

by admin on January 20, 2020

The first round of the Open State-wide Challenge was held at Rosny Park yesterday. Both the Men’s & Women’s competitions saw some great bowls but let’s have a look at the end results.

Round 1 Women

The South started with a 1-1 record, taking the win over the North West 52-40 two rink victory, whilst the North defeated the South 2 side on all rinks 59-38.

In the afternoon match the South also went 1-1 but the results were reversed with the South 1 going down to the North 53-48 with only one Northern rink winning. The South 2 side defeated the North West by 8 shots in a 2 rink victory.

That gives the North the ascendancy, although trailing by 4 points, the South have played 2 extra games.

South 24 points

North 20 points

North West 4 points

Round 1 Men

The spoils were shared in the Men’s competition with all three regions registering a win. In the morning The South 1 team defeated the North West by 8 shots but crucially winning on all three rinks*. The North defeated South 2 by 12 shots and 2 rinks to 1.

In the afternoon the South 1 side backed up their first win with an 11 shot win over the North West, 2 rinks to 1, whilst the closest match of the day saw the North West win by only one shot against the South 2 side with both teams having a win, draw & loss on the three rinks.

That leaves things pretty even in the Men’s competition. How well the 2nd sides for the North & North West play could decide the winner. The points totals are;

South 27 points

North 12 points

North West 9 points

The Statewide Challenge will continue in February on the following dates

Senior SWC – 4th February

Junior SWC – 16th February

Open SWC – 23rd February

* The portal says that South won 3 rinks to 0, but this may be incorrect. If it was 2-1, then the overall scores would be 25/12/11.
