Bowls Arm Nationals Day 1

by Rebecca Van Asch on September 10, 2019

The Tasmanian Bowling Arm team took to the greens at the Tranmere Bowls Club in South Australia yesterday for Day 1 of the National Armed Bowling Championships.  The “Van Diemen Devils” as the team is known, are competing in the National Championships for the second time after making their debut in the competition last year.

Day 1 brought about a tough first round encounter for our Armed Devils when they came across the ever-strong Victorian outfit in the Singles and Fours disciplines.  Victoria have won the past 6 National Bowling Arm Championships in a row and are definitely the team to beat at this event.  The Big V showed their dominance on Day 1 claiming 21 of the 24 points on offer.  The Tasmanian rink skipped by Gordon Hurst managed a draw out of their first game of fours, scoring 11 all after 8 ends.

Tasmania took on Western Australia in the afternoon, which saw the teams switch over to playing Pairs and Triples.  Peter Thow and Heather Jones were our best performers of the day managing an 18-6 victory of the Sandgropers.
