State Fours Results

The Fours sectional play has been run and we have our four Semi-Finalists in the Women’s competition and eight Quarter-Finalists in the Men’s.

With three sections of three and only the winners advancing, the play at Claremont saw all four sections come down to the last game.

In Section 1, it came down to the match against Kim Saunders & Carol Bannister. Bannister did win the middle game against Sonia Martyn but was no match for Saunders, Saunders running away 25-4 victors.

In Section 2, it was little more clear cut as Lyn Triffitt was the only two game winner going into the last match. Rae Simpson need to win by 15 to steal the section whilst Rosie Geeves waitied in the wings hoping Simpson could win by less than 15. But Triffitt held her nerve and won 20-11 to take the section.

In Section 3, Christine Dowl & Jenny Tirant had both defeated Janet Rutherford so it was a winner take all affair. Dowl would be the one to take the early lead and never look threatened, the end score being 15-7.

Section 4 was the only one with 4 teams and it would be Alison Venn’s team that would win their first two games to take the advantage into Game 3. Maxine Monson would be Venn’s last opponent and Monson would need to win by 4 shots and hope the other game between Howard-Smith & Granfield was kept close. Granfield hadn’t won a game but defeated Howard-Smith leaving it to Venn & Monson to decide the section. Monson would not only win by the required 4 shots, but woul win convincingly 22-8 to take the section.

The Men had six sections at Rosny Park with the winners plus the two next best advancing.

In Section 1, the defending champions skipped by Peter Bannister went into the last game as 2 game winners & +20 in shots. Chasing them were David Minns (1 win -3) who would play Isaac Maughan Bannister’s last round opponents Luke Richardson (1 win -2). Bannister was in the box seat and could afford a close loss and still advance. Richardson would go on to defeat Bannister 17-10 but with Minns only winning 24-18, Bannister advanced and Richardson finished with 2 wins +5 hoping that was enough to be a lucky loser.

Section 2 was dominated by Rick Ormerod’s team. He is undefeated in pennant for Dover RSL and was undefeated today winning  by 18 & 16 and was quick to let Michael Sims know all about it after his Micky-Leaks report on Facebook said Ormerod couldn’t even skip with a skipping rope. Ormerod 1 Sims 0. Jesenkovic was 2nd but with -5 shots, knew that it wasn’t going to be good enough to advance.

Section 3 saw Lee Schraner win all three games but he didn’t have it all his own way. In his second match, he was down for most of the game but fought back well to defeat Peter Jenkins by 4. With Jenkins & Sutcliffe having a draw in Game 1, Jenkins 1 win and 1 draw was not going to be enough to get by as one of the next best teams.

In Section 4, Daniel Baker & Gene Ayton played off for the section with a draw being enough for Ayton to win the section. The final game was close but Ayton was forced to chase shots late and despite killing the last end once, couldn’t do enough to catch Baker who would win 16-14. Ayton would finish with 2 wins +7 which would just fall short in claiming one of the lucky loser spots.

In Section 5, Taelyn Male & Scott Summers were playing for the section with both teams defeating Brad Carver. Male got away to a big lead and never looked threatened. Summers seemed to know what was going on with the luck loser race as he was happy to claim one on the last end, giving Male the section and a win by 4. Summers would finish with 2 wins +13, the best of the 2nd place finishers.

In the last section Pat Hoffman & Tim Douce gave David McLean & Brad Sculthorpe the afternoon off thanks to victories over both teams. Douce would pick up 6 shots on a crucial end during the game and would end up 1 shot winners 19-18 to claim the section. Hoffman left the green disappointed as he was unaware that his team had done enough to claim a lucky loser spot, finishing with 2 wins +12.
