Apia Senior Fours Champions Decided.

by admin on February 19, 2018

The Apia Tasmanian Senior Championships have been run and won for 2018 at the Latrobe Bowls Club.
In the men’s final we saw Ulverstone’s Rick Sutton, Bob Franklin, Steve Aitken and Lee Pearson take on Barry Bone (New Norfolk), Tony Vince and Grant Allford both of Glenorchy Rodman and local Noel Purton from Railton Bowls Club.
The Barry Bone skipped rink jumped out to an early lead jumping ahead 10-2 after just 6 ends, the Ulverstone team tried to claw their way back after consecutive singles to close up the cap 12-6 after 11 ends.  However Bone and his crew proved too strong and only gave up 1 more shot before running away as this years champions winning the final 20-7.
The women’s final was a seesawing encounter between Sandy Bay’s Robyn Leggett, Laura Best, Lyn Barlow and Anne Hinkley up against Gaylene Elsworthy (Penguin), Kim Saunders (Invermay), Rosie Geeves (Howrah) and Jeanette Lane (Buckingham).
Elsworthy and her team hit the ground running picking up a 7 on the second end of the match before jumping out to an 11-4 shot lead after only 5 ends.  However the Sandy Bay team were not to be denied and clawed their way back with ones and twos to get back level at 11 all after 10 ends.  Leggett and her ladies won 8 ends in a row to take back the game and the lead skipping out to 19-11 after 13 ends.  With the title now well and truly in their grasp, “the bay” girls only lost 3 more shots before they were crowned the women’s senior fours champions with a 25-14 score line.
