Tasmanian Women Claim Bronze
The Australian Championships have been reintroduced to the Bowls Australia calendar after some years. This event sees the the winners of each state and territories open disciplines compete against each other for the national title.
The Tasmanian foursome of Erin Sesara, Mary Beaumont, Sharon Beavis and Judy Reeve progressed through to the bronze medal match after finishing second in their second. The girls had a tough first up match against the powerhouse Queensland combination of Lynsey Clarke, Chloe Stewart, Julie Keegan and Natasha Jones, who go onto claim the gold at this event.
The Tasmanian’s rallied after this though and holding game against Western Australia with one bowl to come it was a terrific bowl from the WA skipper that saw the game end in a draw. A win in game 3 would give our girls the opportunity to play for bronze and it was set to be a tense encounter with an inform Northern Territory side skipped by Australian Champion of Champions singles champion Colleen Orr. With scores locked at 12 all going into the last end the Tasmanian’s held their nerve to win the end and progress through.
Sesara, Beaumont and Beavis all from the Latrobe Bowls Club along with lead Reeve from Franklin Bowls Club were pitted against the combination from ACT. Our girls were determined though and hit the lead on end 2 and never looked back with a dominant display from all four girls, running away with the Bronze medal after a 26-3 shot victory.
Speaking after the game skip Erin Sesara said it was completely unexpected to come away with a medal from these championships and the girls were simply hoping to just get a win or two on the board; “To come away with a bronze medal is just awesome, these girls really stepped up in the final”.
Congratulations to the Tasmanian Women’s fours team and we look forward to following the progress of our other Tasmanian’s throughout the remainder of the week.
