by admin on January 3, 2017

The Blue-Ribbon Singles event commenced today, with the men’s event now down to the final 16 competitors and the women’s event to the quarter final stages.

Today was a good day for the defending champions with both Alison Venn and Cameron Tegg making their way through the field unscathed so far.  Venn (Penguin) will now play Dover RSL’s Sonia Martyn who scrapped through her last match after a Titanic tussle against Venn’s sister Bronny King also of Penguin.  While Tegg will play fellow southerner Josh Mabb, with the winner to play the either Tim Douce or Lee Schraner after they do battle.

The remainder of the men’s bottom half of the draw will be a battle of the young guns when Penguin’s Jacob Brown takes on Kingborough’s Taelyn Male, and Longford’s Joey Thomas play State Representative Robert McMullen.

Speaking of young guns, former Australian Junior Representative and current state skip Michael Sims has set up an encounter against current Tasmanian junior representative Josh Walker-Davis.  The survivor of this battle will play the winner of East Launceston’s Will Springer and Ulverstone’s Robert Eudey

The final two matches of the men’s draw will be between North Launceston’s Andrew Whitmore and Longford’s Daniel Baker, and Penguin’s Chris Dudman and Ulverstone’s Mark Harris.

Latrobe’s Shiron Bevis has been the giant killer of the day after strong wins against Tasmanian representatives Kim Saunders and Bree Mabb respectively to set up a quarter final showdown with Invermay’s Vicki Winley also impressing with a victory of another state representative Jackie Knight.

Former State Singles Champion Lyn Triffitt took on fellow state teammate Courtney Hobbs and survived the battle.  She will now play Rae Simpson who has showed she is back in form after recently being selected in the Tasmanian Team again.  The final quarter final clash for the women will be between Scottsdale’s Jean Claridge and Sandy Bay’s Yvonne Buckley.

Tomorrow will see the conclusion of the men’s and women’s fours disciplines at the Devonport Bowls Club.  The men’s quarter finals will commence at 9.30am before both semi finals.

The singles will recommence on Saturday at Devonport also from 9.30am.
