2017 State Womens Fours Preview

by admin on December 31, 2016

The 2017 State Championships start tomorrow with the Fours being the first event. The Devonport bowls club will host 14 teams in 4 sections competing for the 4 spots in the semi-finals.

Section 1 has shaped up to be what looks like the toughest of the four sections, with the four contenders evenly matched. Rae Simpson has had a team shake up after their runners up effort last season, and will be looking to go one further this year. Lyn Triffitt’s rink has some experienced draw bowlers that will allow for her to play her natural game and convert when required.

Section 2 has a bye. Erin Sesara’s rink will be hard to beat and I am tipping them to take this section comfortably with the experience of Judy Reeve and Mary Beaumont unmatched.

Section 3 is looking hard to pick with evenly matched teams who will all be looking at getting wins on the board. I would not be surprised to see this section come down to shots up at the end of days play with a 2 game winner progressing. This section also sees the return of Kaia Dalrymple to the competition after a number of years away from this level of the game.

Section 4 is filled with Tasmanian squad members and will keep the selectors busy throughout the day, with 2 current leads the bookends of Team A. Venn, Harman, Howard and Zoon will no doubt provide some competitive heads with opposition teams needing to play smart when trying to overcome this rink. Gaylene Elsworthy will get things started for the third team in this section, looking to go back to back with rink mate Kim Saunders after winning the event last year. Debra Lee and Courtney Hobbs step in to the rink in the second and skips spots respectively. With a bye in the section it looks likely to come down to the A v C match up for the semi-final spot.
