Bowls Tasmania Women’s Bowler of the Year

by admin on June 1, 2016

The Tasmanian Women’s Bowler of the Year was this year won
by Kim Saunders for the first time.  Kim
has had a terrific 2015/16 season that saw her claim victories in 2 State
Titles as well as a runners up and a Northern Triples Title.  Kim’s first title for the season came during the Bowls Tasmania Gala Week of Bowls where she took out the Women’s
Fours title along with Invermay teammates Bec Van Asch and Vicki Winley and
Penguins Gaylene Elsworthy.  Saunders
also picked up more points that week when she teamed again with Elsworthy to
make the final of the state pairs but just fell short to young guns Hollie Keen
and Mikayla Fuller.
In March Saunders and Elsworthy again teamed up with Winley
to take out the State Triples title at the North Launceston Bowls Club, while Saunders and Winley being from the
same region claimed the northern triples title together.  This year was a standout year for Kim and saw
her also perform well on the National stage for Tasmania where she picked up
the Tasmanian Women’s player of the series at the Australia Sides Championships
in Perth and she has since gone on to now qualify for the Australian Indoor
Singles Championships later in the year.
With Vicki Winley featuring in so many of the already
mentioned championships this year with her fellow swampy it is no surprise that
she finished in second place in the women’s Tasmanian Bowler of the Year, 18 points
behind.  Winley’s strong season has been
rewarded with a selection in the Tasmanian Development Squad for 2016.
A further 8 points behind was the Penguin duo Gaylene Elsworthy and Alison
Venn in equal third position on the overall leader board.  Elsworthy also had a strong season after a
short hiatus due to a knee reconstruction claiming 2 of the aforementioned state
titles and a runners up all with Saunders, and has just been named in the
Tasmanian Senior Team set to play in October in Western Australia.  Alison Venn also had a stellar 2015/16 season
where she won the Tasmanian Women’s Singles Title for the first time in Hobart.  She also backed up this victory with North West
regional titles in the women’s Pairs and Triples.  This past season also saw Alison make her
debut for Tasmania.
