Van Asch Takes out the Double
The State Open Singles and Triples Championships have just concluded at the Kings Meadows Bowls Club after four days play in what can only be described as trying conditions at time. Play was even suspended at one point throughout the competition as it was deemed too dangerous to play in the blustery winds with the flying all over the place and jacks even moving at points during the ends. However there were some flashes of sun throughout and it was on with the show.
After many hard fought matches the competition was dwindled down to the semi finals of the women’s triples with Ruby Jamieson’s team taking on Patsy Medwin’s team in the first semi. The ever experienced team of Jamieson, Margaret Woodiwiss and Molly Howell from Cosgrove Park proved too strong progressing to the grand final in convincing style. While the other semi final saw Bec Van Asch’s Invermay team of Nicole Smith and Kim Saunders progress through to the final after defeating the East Launceston combination skipped by Sally Redman.
It was the Cosgrove ladies that came out of the blocks firing first being ahead 12-6 at the half way mark, however after trailing by 2 after the 18th end the girls from the swamp hit back scoring a 5 on the next end and not didn’t drop another shot to take out the 2013/14 Tasmanian Triples Title 23-15.
The Blue Ribbon Singles Event was concluded on Monday with some exciting exhibitions on display. Bec Van Asch progressed through to the final after beating Carol Bannister 25-15 in the semi final, while Rae Simpson beat former champion Gaylene Elsworthy by 3 shots to also progress. Van Asch continued her dominant performance proving too strong for Simpson in the final claiming her fourth State Open Singles Crown 25-8.
