Bowls Explained

Lawn Bowls is a game that takes seconds to learn - and a lifetime to master.

It is a game which can be played with many levels of efficiency. It is a game which encompasses all that is good in competition, development of camaraderie and sporting attitudes. It is one of Australia's biggest participation sports and is enjoying increasing popularity and attracting younger players.

"Why didn't I take up bowls years ago" is a comment heard frequently from those who come to the game in later life.

Bowlers can be categorized into three groups with each group  gaining enjoyment and satisfaction in a variety of ways.

The first of these is the social bowler who wants an enjoyable experience with a degree of competition but without the commitment of time and effort required for the more structured formats of play. The social bowler enjoys social days, Barefoot Bowls, Twilight Bowls, Corporate Challenges and the Get on the Green program.

The second group also play social bowls and also participate in pennant matches and club championships.  They spend more time practicing their skills but do not have the ambition or dedication to move into the third group.

The last group has the least number of bowlers.  It is the group containing players who aspire to greater success and who have the dedication to make the sacrifices and put in the "hard yards" to achieve that success. These are the champions and potential champions who we see representing first their club then Association, State and Country.
