Bowls Tasmania Gala Week 2018

by admin on November 5, 2017

The 2018 Bowls Tasmania Gala Week of Bowls promises to be bigger and better than ever this season with the introduction of more events into the calendar.  Once again the Gala Week will include the Men’s and Women’s Open Singles, Pairs and Fours and the Bowlers with a Disability Championships, along with the introduction of the Junior Championships and the Bowlers with Bowling Arms.
The Bowlers with a Disability Championships enjoyed a 100% increase in entries last year and due to this success will see the introduction of the Disability Pairs Championships for the first time.  Although the singles will be gender and category specific, the pairs will be an open disability event in its inaugural year.  With bowlers of any of the four categories (Physical, Intellectual, Hearing or Visual Impaired) and of any gender able to play with one another to contest the Bowlers with a Disability Pairs Championship.
This year will also see the Tasmanian Junior Championships held during the Gala Week for the first time with the States best competing for the boys and girls Singles and Pairs crowns.  Bowls Tasmania surveyed participants at the end of last season and with an overwhelming response requesting this event be held at this time during the school holidays the change was made.
Also for the first time we will see the introduction of the Bowlers with Bowling Arms State Championships, also during the last 3 days of the Gala Week.  Our Bowlers with Bowling Arms is a new initiative by Bowls Tasmania and with the introduction of a special committee in this area things are speeding along.  In October we saw the clinics held in each region for existing Bowling Arms participants and for coaches to come along and received specialised coaching in these areas, the first of its kind in Tasmania.  Bowls Tasmania is hoping to see our first Tasmanian Bowlers with Bowling Arms team represent at next years National Bowling Arm Championships and these State Championships will go a long way to selecting these teams, so if you have aspirations of making these teams we would strongly encourage you to enter in the Gala Week.  In its inaugural year the Tasmanian Championships will be hosting Singles and Pairs Championships and the event will be held as an open gender competition because the National Championships is an open gender event with a minimum of 2 from the opposite gender required to compete.
The Gala Week will be held in the Launceston Area with clubs to be finalised in early to mid December with appointing clubs with the best greens available being our key focus to host these events.
